How to create the perfect outdoor relaxation area

Having a terrace or a landscaped outdoor area can be uncomfortable if comfort, privacy and a good furniture layout are not taken into account. Creating a pleasant space to unwind and enjoy the outdoors does not require a major renovation, but rather a few small changes to make the most of the space and choose elements that meet your individual needs.

Think about the layout before choosing your furniture

A good layout is not about making use of every last inch of space, but about making it comfortable to move around and enjoy. Before adding new elements, it is worth distinguishing between circulation areas and deciding where each activity will take place.

On a small terrace, for example, it may be preferable to place the furniture against a wall and leave the centre clear to make it easier for people to move around. In a garden, on the other hand, there is more freedom to separate the relaxation area from the other areas and create different zones.

Create a special corner for relaxing

A relaxation area does not need to be filled with things or furniture. The important thing is to have comfortable furniture that allows you to sit or lie down while leaving enough space around it to move around easily without bumping into anything.

A hammock can be an ideal option when you want to create a corner dedicated to relaxation. There are also different models to suit different spaces, from traditional hammocks to chair-style models.

However, before choosing one, it is worth finding the best place to put it. Models that require support points need a suitable structure and secure fixing. If there are no trees or other suitable elements available, a hammock with a freestanding stand is the best option.

Improve privacy without closing off the space

An outdoor area can lose some of its charm when it is too exposed to neighbouring homes or the road. However, creating privacy does not mean enclosing the space so completely that you become isolated from the outdoors.

Plants and hedges are excellent allies for creating a separation without losing your connection with the surroundings. Trellises, panels and other elements can serve a similar purpose and can also provide support for climbing plants.

It is also worth paying attention to the door that connects the home to the terrace or garden. A wide sliding door that is easy to open provides greater convenience and makes the outdoor space feel like an extension of the home.

Prioritise functionality over decoration

A terrace or garden does not need to follow trends to become an enjoyable space. Decoration can help create a welcoming atmosphere, but it should not come at the expense of essentials such as comfort, spaciousness or protection from the sun.

Before adding new elements, it is worth asking whether they are necessary or whether they will actually be used. Sometimes removing a piece of furniture that takes up too much space or moving a relaxation area has a greater effect than adding more objects.
